The Pros and Cons of Dressing a Westie Weighing the Benefits and Drawbacks of Canine Fashion for Your West Highland White Terrier
Many owners enjoy dressing up their Westies in adorable outfits. Our daughter is such an individual and, if allowed, would probably keep our Westie dressed up all the time. But is it truly in the best interest of the dog? Our current Westie, Minnie, has severe skin allergies so we no longer allow her to be dressed longer than it takes for a quick picture to be taken. We understand that every person has a unique perspective on whether or not to dress their dogs, and that’s fine. This article wasn’t written to encourage or discourage dressing your Westie. That decision is yours alone. Rather, it explores the various advantages and disadvantages of putting clothes on your Westie, helping you make an informed decision for your furry companion.
Pros of Dressing a Westie Protection from the Elements Westies have a double coat, but harsh weather conditions can still pose challenges. Lightweight sweaters or raincoats provide extra warmth during cold winters or shield your pup from rain and wind, ensuring their comfort outdoors. Allergy and Skin Condition Management Clothing can help prevent your Westie from scratching or licking areas affected by allergies or skin conditions, acting as a barrier to reduce irritation and exposure to allergens. But it can also be detrimental. Clothing can make conditions such as yeast worse by providing a moist environment next to their skin. Fashion and Fun For many owners, dressing up their Westie is a delightful way to express their pet's personality. Cute outfits can make special occasions, holidays, or photo sessions memorable and enjoyable for the whole family. Visibility and Safety Reflective vests or brightly colored clothing can make your Westie more visible during walks, particularly at night or in busy areas, reducing the risk of accidents. Cons of Dressing a Westie Discomfort and Restricted Movement Not all Westies enjoy wearing clothes. Ill-fitting or restrictive outfits can cause discomfort, limit natural movement, or even lead to chafing and irritation. Overheating Westies are active dogs, and extra layers may cause them to overheat, especially in warm weather or during exercise. It's crucial to monitor your dog for signs of distress and remove clothing when necessary. Potential for Anxiety Some dogs may feel stressed or anxious when dressed, displaying behaviors like excessive scratching, shaking, or attempting to remove the outfit. Respecting your pet's comfort level is essential. Inconvenience and Hygiene Clothing can become soiled quickly, requiring frequent washing. Additionally, it may hinder your Westie when pottying if not designed properly, potentially leading to messes. Dressing a Westie can be both practical and enjoyable, offering protection and opportunities for fun, but it is not without drawbacks. Always consider your individual dog's comfort, health, and preferences when choosing to dress them, and prioritize their well-being above all else. With thoughtful selection and attentive care, you can ensure your Westie stays happy and stylish, whether dressed up or au naturel.
